School & University Fitness Facilities

Equipment for teaching programmes and student use, specified around supervision, durability and the fact that a school gym is used by hundreds of untrained hands a day.

An education facility buys fitness equipment for two audiences at once: a curriculum that has to be delivered safely to students who have never touched a machine, and an open-access facility that has to survive being used by hundreds of teenagers with no supervision pattern you can predict.

What changes in an education setting

Three things, and they change the specification materially.

Supervision. In a teaching context a single instructor may be watching twenty students. That rules out equipment where a wrong setup is the difference between a good rep and an injury. Pin-loaded machines with a fixed start position and a printed instruction plate are the right answer; plate-loaded machines without adjustable handles are the wrong one.

Abuse tolerance. A school floor sees more mishandling in a term than a commercial club sees in a year. Start with the parts that take the punishment: heavy-wall racks, UHMW-PE lined J-hooks, PVD or powder coated sled bars, replaceable grip sleeves. Anything cosmetic will be replaced, so budget for it as a consumable.

Budget cycles. Education budgets are annual and audit-driven. Most institutions prefer a phased installation across two or three fiscal years, which is why modular platforms and bay-based rigs are the sensible first purchase.

A layout that works for teaching

We usually propose three zones: a teaching zone of six to ten pin-loaded stations arranged in two facing rows for line-of-sight supervision; a strength zone with two to four racks or platforms and a full plate inventory; and a conditioning zone with rowers, air bikes and mat space for circuit work. Dumbbells in 2.5 kg steps from 2.5 to 30 kg are enough for almost any school programme and cost far less than a 50 kg set.

Where a facility is shared with the public outside school hours, equipment should be specified at commercial duty rather than light commercial, and supervision rules should be the deciding factor in the layout rather than floor area.
